Matala is one of the best places to visit when you are in Heraklion as there are many things to see. There is a long sandy beach which is rather unique as it’s secluded with the mountain caves vista making it an experience not to be missed.

Agiofarago Beach is a hidden gem tucked away in a remote location in southern Crete. Visitors must hike for 45 minutes to reach this secluded paradise, but the journey is well worth it. These are our favourite beaches to visit in the region of Heraklion. We are also including some bonus beaches that are amazing to visit, however didn’t make our Top 5 for this year.
6. Gefyri Beach
Gefyri beach is located close to the harbour of Hersonissos which is one of the most popular places in Crete! It has clear turquoise waters that will certainly leave you speechless!
7. Star Beach
Star beach has been the choice of many tourists and locals for years now. It has been well looked after and resembles an exotic location of a different continent. In addition, there are many activities and water sports to suit all tastes.
8. Komos Beach
Komos beach is one of the longest beaches on the island hence it was one of the ports of ancient Pheastos. The ruins of ancient Kommos are still visible among the sands dunes. Also, if you were to visit in September, you might get a glimpse of the protected sea turtles Caretta Caretta that nest in the sand of the beach.
9. Lygaria Beach
With its clear turquoise waters and soft golden sand, our final pick is Lygaria, a perfect spot for swimming and sunbathing. The beach is surrounded by lush green hills and traditional tavernas, where visitors can indulge in delicious Cretan cuisine. For those seeking adventure, the beach also offers water sports activities like snorkeling and scuba diving.
10. Red Beach
