Koules Fortress or Castello a Mare or Castello del Molo as it is also known is one of the most impressive landmarks of the city. It was built between the 9th and 10th century by the Arabs.
During the Venetian occupation, the senate decided to increase the fortifications of Candia which is where the modern city of Heraklion stands today, so Castello a Mare began its construction in 1523 and finished in 1540.
The Ottoman Empire took over the fortress in 1669 after a long siege of the city and it is when the Venetians surrendered the whole city of Candia.
Nowadays, the fortress has been beautifly restored and is open to the public. The space also hosts numerous events and exhibitions throughout the year.
