The Contemporary Art Museum of Crete is located in the heart of the historic city of Rethymno, beneath the Venetian Castle. Since 2009, it has occupied a state-of-the-art exhibition space spanning over 1000 square meters. Following expansion efforts, it recently incorporated the former Municipal Art Gallery “L. Kanakakis” (1992) and the Centre of Contemporary Art (1995).
Featuring a permanent collection comprising approximately 750 works, the museum showcases pieces by Lefteris Kanakakis, including oil paintings, drawings, and watercolors that span his entire artistic career. Additionally, the collection encompasses works by contemporary Greek and international artists, representing the diverse spectrum of Greek art from 1950 to the present, ranging from abstraction to digital art.
The central space of the Contemporary Art Museum of Crete (located at Str. Mesologgiou 32) hosts the permanent collection. The museum also utilizes alternative exhibition spaces for hosting temporary exhibitions with national and international content. Concurrently, the museum organizes lectures, training programs, and collaborates with institutions in Greece and abroad. Since 1992, the museum has curated 190 exhibitions, both solo and group, and has published 90 catalogs.
Educational programs and guided tours tailored to different age groups (children, adolescents, adults) are offered daily for all exhibitions. The Educational Sector and Art Workshops, established in 1996, operate within the broader scope of the museum’s activities.
These activities take place either on the museum premises or in a specially designated space at Str. Himaras 8, adjacent to the museum. Recognizing creative expression as a fundamental right for all, the workshops cater to children, young people, families, and adults of all ages.
