1. Lake Voulismeni
Lake Voulismeni is the most popular landmark of Agios Nikolaos, and for that matter it is the most photographed one as well! Voulismeni was originally a sweetwater lake, but the construction of a channel now connects it to the port. On the west side, you will get an amazing viewpont overlooking the entire lake.
2. Spinalonga Island & Fortress
Spinalonga island stands as one of the most popular historical attractions of Crete mainly due to its sad history. Victoria Hislop’s first novel and international bestseller The Island is set in Spinkalonga, which also contributed with the growing popularity of the island. It is highly recommended if you want to learn more about the history of Crete.
3. Voulisma Beach
Awarded with the Blue Flag, Voulisma beach is a gorgeous beach with amazing turquoise waters not far from Agios Nikolaos. It ranks among the best beaches you can visit in Crete and certainly one you don’t want to miss if you are visiting Lasithi.
4. Amazonas Park
Amazonas Park is located 25 Km from Agios Nikolaos and although it might not be close to the city, it is definitely worth the drive. It is an animal park, but also a rescue center for various animals from South America, such as parrots and monkeys and it makes a great place to visit especially for families!
5. Dikteon Andron Cave (Psychro)
Dikteon Andron is one of the two places in Crete which claim the birthplace of the Greek god Zeus! This ancient cave was a shrine in Minoan times and has some very impressive rock formations and would make a lovely daytrip for the family!
6. Istron Bay Beach or Pylos Beach
Another magnificent beach close to Agios Nikolaos is that of Istron Bay. It is a very serene beach with calm waters due to the bay. The area of Istron has some of the best beaches in Crete and Istron Bay or Pylos as it is often called is no exception.
7. Elounda
Elounda is a fishing village north of Agios Nikolaos that is considered on of the most eclectic destinations in Aegean. The harbour of Elounda is very picturesque and offers many choices for food and drink.
8. Agios Panteleimon Beach
It takes its name from the lonely chapel at the beach, Agios Panteleimon is one of the beaches around the Istro area and it is fairly isolated and unspoiled. You will not find many people at the beach, so this would make an ideal quiet and relaxing day out.
