Traditionally a fishing village, Elounda (Greek: Ελούντα) has seen great touristic development over the past few years and is fast becoming a cosmopolitan holiday destination with 5-star resorts.
The area offers plenty of shops and restaurants right by the beach to enjoy a nice meal and also a number of beaches within walking distance from the main square.
The most famous attraction of Elounda is the island fortress of Spinalonga which was used as a leper colony from 1903 to 1957. Nowadays, it has been getting a lot of attention due to the bestseller of Victoria Hislop “The Island” which is set in Spinalonga.
Tip: There are plenty of boats departing from the main square to Spinalonga, however if you are looking for a more affordable option, you can go to the nearby village of Plaka and take the boat from there which will cost you 8 euro return.
