Four Martyrs Church (or “Tesseris Martyres” in Greek) is situated at the center of Rethymno and very close to the Municipal Garden and the Guora Gate leading to the entrance to the Old Town.
The church is named after four Cretans (Aggelis, Emmanouil, Georgios and Nikolaos) who refused to convert their religion from Christianity to Islam when Rethymno was occupied by the Turks in the 1800s.
The four men were then executed near the Guora Gate and close to where the church is now. The interior of the church is stunning with wonderful murals and chandeliers.
