Komolithi or Sand Dunes is a geological phenomenon in the west side of Crete, about 35 km away from Chania city. They are located in the area of Potamida in the Kissamos Providence.
The strange-shaped dunes were created due to erosion of underlying soft clay soils over hundreds and hundreds of years.
It is a very unique and impressive phenomenon unlike any other in Crete and it is definitely worth the detour on your way to Elafonisi beach.
