Saint George Monastery (Karydi)

The monastery of Saint George or Agios Georgios as it is in Greek is located near Vamos village in the prefecture of Chania. It is approximately 35 km from Chania center and a bit further from the Rethymno center.

It was founded in the early 17th century and during the Turkish occupation of Crete, the monastery had to become part of the Holy Trinity monastery in order to afford the heavy taxes imposed by the Turks.

The monks of the Holy Trinity build the church of Saint George and were graded to run an olive oil factory by the Turks.  The olive oil factory had 12 arches which are still standing to this day and are the trademark of the monastery.
