Stavros Beach

This unique beach is located in Akrotiri at the northern tip of Chania, an approximate half hour drive from the center of the city. The beach became widely popular in the 70’s as it featured scenes from the film Zorba the Greek (1964) where Anthony Quinn is seen dancing on the beach of Stavros.

The film won 3 Academy Awards, one of which was donated to a tavern in the village by cinematographer Walter Lassally, and up until recently you could walk in and ask the owners to take a picture with the Oscar.  Sadly, a few years ago, there was a fire and the restaurant burned down and the Oscar with it.

Make sure you walk at the end of the beach where you can see impressive rock formations submerged in water.

The umbrella and sunbed hire can be a bit pricey in Stavros, so laying down on your towel is always an option. Some coffee places and restaurants can be found close to the beach, as well as one or two supermarkets.

There is also free parking.
